Archie McDougall Gallery

 
  I started art in 2016 having never before dabbled or even picked up a brush (except for walls and skirting boards) and instantly got hooked. I have been a member of this art club since 2017. I started by trying watercolour thinking it was going to be the easiest medium only to find it was completely beyond me. Eventually I settled on oils, charcoal and pastels with oils being my strongest preference. I also favour a more realistic end result with minimal abstraction. Still life and portraits are still my favourite subjects with an occasional landscape. Still life offers me the greatest creative input by choosing and arranging the objects into a staged scene which I prefer to paint directly from life rather than from a photo. More often than not it takes me longer to arrange/compose the still life than to paint it. A typical setup and resulting painting is shown below.....
